Mfd as a global transcription regulator

Results from Martin et al. (2021) demonstrated that the transcription factor “Mutation frequency decline” (Mfd) influences Bacillus subtilis bacterial cell physiology and modulates the expression of genes in stationary-phase cells. Examples of such genes with dysregulated expression when Mfd is deficient in the cell include those encoding for motility, endospore formation, metabolism, protection against oxidative stress, etc. This uncovers a gap in the knowledge of bacterial cell physiology and the uncharacterized role that Mfd plays in the biology of the cell.

Structure and function of Mfd in gene expression, DNA repair and mutagenesis. (Adapted from Brugger et al., 2020; Deaconescu, 2021.)
